You Should Probably Dream More

May 30, 2016 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

Over the past few weeks, as Home & Family took the show on the road, I visited Dollywood, the theme park that Dolly Parton developed.  Surprisingly, the treasure that I took away from the trip is that we should all dream more.

Approximately 30 years ago, Dolly Parton made an announcement on TV that she was going to give back to her community by building a theme park.  Everyone took it as a joke.  The reality was that Dolly was serious.  Her entire career was a combination of incredible talent, inspired by her roots – family, faith and the Great Smoky Mountains.   Her songs like Tennessee Mountain Home captured the heart and soul of its people and contributed to her success – so she began to dream her theme park into existence.

She found an old, existing theme park near her home town of Sevierville, Tennessee, went into partnership with him and began to build.  She found joint venture partners and sponsors who helped her.  I think Dolly would call this “putting wings and feet and legs on your dreams.”  Thirty years later, Dollywood is a prominent theme park, boasting some of the best roller coasters in the country according to roller coaster enthusiasts.  By holding onto her vision as a way to give back to the community, she now employs approximately 4000 people and the entire region has benefited financially as outside attractions pop up in the surrounding areas.

There is a great deal of visual dreaming apparent when you see Dollywood.  It’s as if Dolly sings from her soul and imbues it upon all that she touches.  First, she didn’t build a theme park on a parking lot.   Instead, she preserved the natural topography, including a brook that runs through the park.   Ducks are part of the ecosystem – and in the evening as the park is closing, they emerge from their watery nooks to sleep on the walkways throughout the park.  The mountains are an exquisite backdrop to the amusement space.

She must have thought fondly of the people who lived in poverty stricken Appalachia as she grew up.  Dolly’s songs and music emerged from this humble background.  She uses what she appreciated to build her businesses.  She plays the mountain instruments, like guitar, dulcimer, and autoharp.  She sings their stories.  She brings their history to the public eye with theatrical presentations, displays and museums throughout the park.  The blacksmiths, potters, candle makers and glass blowers that populate Craftsman’s Valley in the park now are reminiscent of those times and she has kept the artisans at work for the past 30 years.

Of course, food plays a big role at the park where traditional Southern cooking dominates – from taffy to cinnamon bread, turkey legs to fried chicken sandwiches and, of course, the story of stone soup.  The classic “Stone Soup” is retold as an example of how Dolly’s mom provided special attention to her children through their contributions to the stone soup in hard times.

Even faith gets its due within the park with the presence of an old chapel, moved onto the property.  This chapel has a real chaplain, a member of a resort chaplains association, and provides regular Sunday services to all who wish to attend.  Peter and I spent a few moments taking in the classic old church as we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary at the park.

As Ms. Parton said on our TV show, “one dream leads to another.”  Her dream of a theme park led to one of a resort hotel where people could stay when they came to visit Dollywood.  She must have dreamed of its grand entry and magnificent picture window that opens upon all the outdoor pool facilities.

Dolly calls it their “watering hole,” just like the ones she knew as a child.   From the staircase leading down to it, you are high above it all and view the mountains rolling away into the distance.  Rocking chairs are an ever present reminder of times spent out on porches at night.  In her desire to make the hotel family friendly, she even provides bunk beds in the rooms next to the main beds, as well as refrigerators and microwaves (on request).   There is a camp for kids near the indoor pool.   Even the lounge echoes its Appalachian origins in the moonshine mason jars collage behind the bar.

Ms. Parton believes in the power of dreams and actively educates people to dream more.  Obviously, the name Dreammore Resort echoes her feelings, as well as her favorite inspirational sayings hung in all the corridors of the hotel, the dream box on display in the lower lobby, and the multitude of butterflies woven into the carpeting and other places.   When she speaks, you hear the message loud and clear.  “Love one another more.  Dream more, care more, do more and be more.”

On yet a deeper level, Dolly Parton carries her history and her vision into the contributions she makes to the community.  Her father could not read or write,  inspiring her to create a literacy project called Imagination Library, in which every child in the area receives a book when they are born and every month thereafter until they go to school.  The program has grown to include the entire State of Tennessee and beyond.  Dreaming comes from imagining and books can help us imagine.

Dolly has also worked with the American Eagle Foundation for 27 years.  To her, saving our national symbol from extinction was a way to honor and appreciate the wildlife in her roots.  Today, visitors to the park can see injured bald eagles recuperating on the slopes above them, contribute to the breeding and preservation of the species, and get to see the beauty of an eagle in flight as we did when the eagle Challenger flew overhead during our stage show.  It is an incredibly moving experience.

Dolly Parton has mastered the ability to manifest her dreams as she incorporates her roots and her values into her music, businesses and philanthropy.  She might say it more simply.  Standing on stage, she seems so genuine – raised in faith, building upon her roots and making a difference in the lives of others.   She is truly an inspiration and a reminder that we should all dream more.  As Dolly puts it, a dream is a wish plus work – and you can make that happen.

All of this came about because Dolly Parton had a dream. The best thing I can ask for you today is that you dream more and learn to do the tasks that lead you to their expression.

To Your Success,

Susan

Taking Notice of Your Inner Advice More Quickly

March 19, 2016 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

Today, I am laughing at myself.  You see, I just realized that I have spent months developing tools and techniques, visualizing, planning and taking action toward my goals, yet missed something that was right in front of my face.

In “Rainbows Over Ruins,” I tell you my story, however, I want you to be able to do this for yourself.  This has translated into the development of a social media platform where you can find me and content for a course on these topics.

There’s a touch of’ do as I say, not as I do in this.’  Note that I instruct others to develop a strong relationship with their Higher Self; call it your subconscious mind is you wish.  This relationship can be an important factor in achieving goals.  That’s where the humor comes in.  I am not always listening to my own inner voice.  I think I am listening and taking action when I receive an impetus to do something, however, often I just file the ideas away for future reference.

Here’s an example:  In “Rainbows Over Ruins,” I describe my desire to build a center where people can develop their ability to use the power of their mind, work with others, and incubate their dreams into realization.  Over the past few months, the sense that I should begin to focus on this center has grown ever stronger.  I often suggest students should ask themselves a question – What can I do today to feel the way I want to feel when I have or achieve my dream?  Asking myself that question, the answer that has come up is to volunteer at a similar venue to my dream site.  I’ve been searching for one.

Spiritworks-Center For Spiritual Living - Burbank, CA, United StatesThe humor in this is that this week I realized that the Universe has been pointing me to a place for months.  I drive past it on the way to work most mornings.  A colleague, John Charnay, discussed it with me a few months ago.  And I kept saying to myself, “I’ll get over there.  I’ll introduce myself.”  Then John scheduled a workshop at the very same facility on vision boards (which you may be aware are one of my passions). Of course I went, both to support John and because I love playing with vision boards.  The results: (i) a new, smaller board for my home office, (ii) a visit to the SpiritWorks center, (iii) meeting the very person on my list of people to contact, and (iv) seeing that the facility has several components of my dream center.  This may very well be an ideal place to actively pursue volunteer work.  Plus, a new afformation is being added to my routine:  Why am I listening responsively to inner suggestions I receive?

I wonder, what inner nudges are you receiving that you are just not taking the time to investigate?  Today is a perfect day to explore possible answers that may move your dream projects one step closer.  Let down your resistance; let go of the compulsion to know and control everything – and see what happens.  It’s just one step after all, not a lifelong commitment.

May you find joy in the discovery of what your Higher Self is suggesting for you.

To Your Success,

Susan

Meet Jeanette Pavini Talking About Cash Money

June 16, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

pavini_hdstwebpic-1When we experience financial loss, we feel pain. Money is a very powerful word for most people. And when our cash flow is disrupted or doesn’t exist, or when we lose things we have accumulated, we feel it. Therefore, one of the most beneficial things you can do after a disaster is to restore your financial house once it is in ruins.

After our landslide, we found that we could have used more guidance in this area. I would have welcomed a “Disasters for Dummies” style book at the time so I thought you might like to meet someone who can give you sound advice too.

That’s why I asked Jeanette Pavini to join me on my podcast Rebuilding Your Life: Moving from Disaster to Prosperity. Jeanette is a consumer and investigative reporter specializing in saving money. You may already be familiar with her as she has a consumer show called The Real Deal, has appeared as a guest on The Today Show and USA Today’s video network. I get to work with Jeanette regularly as she is a family member on Hallmark Channel’s Home and Family.

Jeanette and I had a chance to talk on set which helped me gain an insight into her passions for cash and savings. Jeanette told me that she had come to the realization that Old World wisdom, tips and stories from her Dad have a timeless appeal, and mix well with her research and contemporary recommendations for thousands of articles on the topic of savings. She is in the process of capturing those tidbits for a new book.

One of Jeanette’s core philosophies is that we have lost our relationship with cash. That’s unfortunate because we are much more careful about spending when we have to use actual money. It is easier to stay on a budget with cash. In sharp contrast is our overuse of credit. Jeanette acknowledges that credit can be helpful at certain times, however, all too often we become dependent on credit in a negative way.

Her comments make for very sound advice when you are in recovery mode so I enjoyed my conversation with Jeanette. She also shared a few resources that may help you. She recommends Debtors Anonymous, not only for the information, but also the sense of belonging with other like minded individuals. And if you are trying to wean yourself from habitual use of credit, she recommends the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of San Francisco. They help you bring down your interest charges and get you on a plan.

There were several good takeaways: Do not use your retirement money to pay down your bills. Pay more than the minimums each month. Find the extra dollars to pay those extra amounts in areas of flexibility in your budget and leave those credit cards at home when you go shopping.

Come meet Jeanette at Rebuilding Your Life 1008 Jeanette Pavini on Money. The URL is ssherayko.audello.com/podcast/2/.   Or http://goo.gl/OkAtqk.

You too can rebuild out of ruins and Jeanette has some very practical advice to help you do just that.

To Your Success,

Susan

Living Bold – Meet Pam Fitros

June 16, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

What happens when you make a bold choice that flies in the face of social attitudes? Pam Fitros and I talk about it on episode 1007 of my podcast, Rebuilding Your Life: Moving from Disaster to Prosperity (which is available on iTunes and Stitcher).

A few years back, Pam was living a pretty normal life, working with the elderly. She had studied psychology at Western Michigan University, was married with two grown children and one granddaughter.

Then a physical condition called Alopecia Universalis changed her life forever. People who suffer from one of the various types of alopecia lose their hair. It may be a thinning or it may be the loss of every hair on your body. That is what happened to Pam.

In our world, we are what Pam calls “hair obsessed.” People look at women strangely and tend to avoid contact when you don’t have any hair. Even Pam’s close friends and family initially had negative reactions to her condition. To mask it, women feel compelled to wear wigs and scarves. Unfortunately, that was very uncomfortable for Pam and she found herself withdrawing from hugging other people for fear that jewelry might catch in her wig and pull it off.

One day, an elderly woman who heard the distress in Pam’s voice walked right up to her and said, “So take the d…. thing off.” Everyone in the room who heard her nodded in agreement. So that is exactly what Pam did. Accepting what she could not change, she embraced it. She took off her wig and has never put it on again.

She has so many funny stories to share. As she related to others, especially her granddaughter and other young children, Pam found herself seeing people who were at a loss to know how to cope with this visual difference. Parents would shush their children and pull them away; small children would burst into tears. Pam knew it was important to tell people about alopecia and to share stories that would help everyone come to grips with this condition. People listen to and remember stories.

Pam has gone on to become a voice of positive change for the millions of women suffering from this immune disorder and others similar to it. Realizing that she needed to get her empowering message of hope and courage out to others if she was to help them, Pam has created a business to do it. She is learning new business skills, marketing, speaking on the subject and even has a new podcast Boldly Bald Women: How to Survive and Thrive in a Hair Obsessed World. She has been spotlighted in the National Alopecia Areata Foundation Magazine, interviewed on the podcast Creating Change, is a member of the International Alopecia Day group, as well as Alopecia World.com and several other international social media groups. Along the way, she has become comfortable with herself and is happy just the way she is.

Pam has three approaches that stand out to her:   accepting the situation, helping others feel more comfortable with it and taking time to find others who face similar circumstances. When she found others, it led to a group coming together to share their stories in what has become a bestselling Amazon book, Boldly Bald Women for women who struggle with the emotional and societal impact of hair loss.

Pam’s experience echoes that of numerous survivors of disaster. At some point, we each have the choice to make peace with what has happened to us or fall into despair and even die. The way out is through a hero’s journey, transforming ourselves before we can move forward once again. To learn more about Pam Fitros and how she helps others live with Alopecia, please check out her website: http://boldlybaldwomen.com.   And, of course, catch a glimpse into the delightful Pam Fitros herself at: ssherayko.audello.com/podcast/2/ Rebuilding Your Life 1007 Pam Fitros on Living Bold.

May you gain some of Pam’s wisdom about life’s challenges through her story.

Susan

Has Anyone Given You a Roadmap to Rebuild?

June 13, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

As I look back to those first few weeks after our landslide, life was pretty chaotic. There were many things outside my life experience that needed to be handled, however, the solutions were not evident. At the time, I can remember wishing someone had written a guidebook, but I couldn’t find it. We were able to do simple things – finding a place to stay, rescuing belongings, finding storage and sourcing kennels and homes for our menagerie. However, we were barely aware of the more long term problems we would need to solve. That is, perhaps, the blessing of shock.

roadmap imageThere were so many decisions to make without enough information to evaluate our choices. I would have liked a checklist or a roadmap to help me focus on the next steps that were required to get back on our feet. So, in episode 1006 of Rebuilding Your Life: Moving from Disaster to Prosperity, may I be your guide and provide an image for you to hold as you move through the stages of your individual journey? I’d like to do that.

The image I’ve chosen is the triangle or pyramid we know as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Maslow saw human development as moving from the instinctual to enlightened life. My sense of our experience after a life-altering disaster is that everything we have built up around us collapses, pancaking the levels in one staggering pile of rubble around us. You’ve seen those images in multi-story buildings that fall after an earthquake.

As we begin to rebuild, we must first clear that rubble to provide a level field on which to build anew. We do it instinctively. Those were the activities I could do in the immediate aftermath of the slide. It is the first level of the hierarchy.

Moving up the image of our pyramid of needs, we begin to re-establish or re-create our habits and routines. We will need them to provide structure and a sense of security to the subconscious mind that is charged with our survival. The subconscious may override every desire we summon until we can provide a level of reassurance that everything will be okay and that we will get through this disaster. It will be important to eliminate those habits that no longer serve us, especially those thought habits or paradigms that limit our belief that we can not only survive but thrive in this situation.

The next level on our pyramid is intention. At some point, you will begin to formulate ideas about what you want to make out of the mess in which you find yourself. The recovery work you do at this point becomes a balance point of outer actions and inner work to provide you the focus and sense of direction to accomplish goals. At this stage, you will define what you want, where you are and where you want to be. Very soon, you will be able to lay out a new roadmap, highly customized for you and you alone.

Join me as we reach a turning point in the recovery process. We are standing at the brink of rebuilding where anything is possible, even something better than our previous creations.

Talking Bliss with Kym Douglas

April 10, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

I spent my Saturday talking with Kym Douglas who is my next interview on the Rebuilding Your Life…. Podcast. Kym is part of my weekly work life as a family member on Home and Family for Hallmark Channel, but this was my first opportunity to sit down and talk about her life outside the show.

Kym DouglasKym’s television persona is as the lovely and upbeat expert on beauty secrets of the stars. She’s written four books on the subject, the latest of which is Bliss Happens. Cute story. Jay McGraw, executive producer of The Doctors and his dad, Dr. Phil, suggested the title. Remember all those t-shirts and sayings that deliver the opposite message – s….. happens? Well, bliss happens sends a much more positive message and helps to attract better things into your life. Since publishing the book, Bliss has become Kym’s brand as she shows people how to feel better about themselves by adding a touch of elegance and beauty to their lives. And her message is clear. It doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg to do it.

If you read Kym’s bio in her book blurb, you’ll learn that she’s a beauty guru and lifestyle expert who appears on several television programs. She’s been a regular on The Ellen Degeneres Show, on Home and Family and The Doctors. She started her career as a hard news reporter in Detroit before becoming a red carpet reporter. Kym’s passion has always been to cover more positive subjects, so she developed a signature interview style with celebrities, many of whom were willing to share their beauty secrets. One of the early interviews was with soap opera star, Jerry Douglas. In short order, they fell in love and he whisked her off to Hollywood where they have been happily married for over 25 years.

So why did I want to include Kym in a show that is about rebuilding your life and getting past disasters in order to find prosperity? Quite simply, I wanted to lighten the mood. It’s easy to sink into negative mind space when talking about natural disasters, divorces, deaths, lost loves, financial woes and other tragedies. Yet part of the healing process is to move into positive mind space. It’s about gratitude, appreciation and, yes, bliss.

I had to learn how to do that. It was one of the most powerful ways for me to overcome the aftermath of the landslide. The first step was to accept where I was even as I needed something more. I began by asking myself “I am where I am and why is it okay?” The why question – an afformation – gradually changed into “I am where I am and it’s fabulous, even as I dream of something even better.” And bliss happens when we make the most of what we have in order to get what makes us truly happy – and it all comes together. That’s what Kym shows her audience – how to make the most of what we have.

Kym is a person of faith who believes that bliss is a choice. In a poignant share, Kym reveals how she made the choice to believe in the possibility of a positive outcome when no one was giving her very much hope.   If you have a situation in which the outcome is unclear, why dwell on the negative result when you have an equal possibility of the positive result – and the positive feels so much better?

I’d like you to meet Kym Douglas. She’s my next guest on Rebuilding Your Life: Moving from Disaster to Prosperity. The podcast is available iTunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/rebuilding-your-life-moving/id975055547 as well as Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=62871&refid=stpr.

In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about Kym Douglas and her work now, check out her website: www.kymdouglas.com or follow her @kymdouglas and like her at www.facebook.com/hollywoodbeautyexpert.

Please listen in as we talk bliss with Kym Douglas.

Susan

Channeling Grief into Creativity with Uma Girish

April 9, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

Channeling Grief into Creativity with Uma Girish

Bright and early on Friday, I was talking with Uma Girish, one of my next interviews on the Rebuilding Your Life…. Podcast. I became aware of Uma through the 30-Day Podcast Challenge where she introduced her podcast, The Grammar of Grief. Grief is a natural byproduct of loss, whether we are losing a loved one or everything that we have built up in our lives so I was looking for someone to talk about the topic – and there was Uma.

The stages of grief are well documented. In the immediate aftermath of an event, the first responders and community of support (whether friends, family, church and community, hospital or the Red Cross) get us through the shock and strong emotions we experience.

And then we are home alone with more questions than answers, coping with our new reality. There are often so many things to do in our physical world that we are not paying attention to the symptoms of grieving that are popping up around us. I know that for weeks, Peter and I rescued everything we could from our destroyed home as we figured out what lay ahead of us. Although we conscientiously made efforts to get back to our normal routines, it was challenging. When we finally settled into the rental house that would be our home until the financial issues were resolved, we immediately had physical symptoms of distress and spent weeks with the chiropractor, and the anxiety was relentless. Other people may experience a great deal of loneliness, hostility and guilt.

It’s easy to sink into depression under these circumstances. That’s why a friend at church, Sue Smith (who is a therapist), gave me a routine to follow that might stave off the more serious symptoms of depression – and I was watching for any telltale signs.   She suggested that I spend some time everyday doing each of several tasks: Be in beauty or find inspiration through prayer or meditation. Eat good food that has been cooked as if company was coming. Get enough sleep, at least 7-8 hours. Get some exercise. Laugh. Watch TV, listen to tapes and laugh. Talk with a friend with whom you can share anything. Learn something new. Over time, I added a couple of my own. Be of service. Helping others helps you feel better as well. And spend a few minutes every morning to express gratitude and appreciation for life and where you see movement toward restoring your life and building toward something better.

When we are grieving, we may find it difficult to make that shift toward a renewed future. We may have rebuilt as much of the life we had as possible, yet a gaping hole remains and it stops us from enjoying ourselves. We draw a blank on pursuing a different future and don’t want to lose our memories of what was before.   This is where Uma Girish comes into the conversation.

Uma is a Grief Guide and certified Dream Coach, as well as an award-winning author. Her book, Losing Amma, Finding Home: A Memoir About Love, Loss and Life’s Detours is published by Hay House. In it she chronicles her own story of the grief journey she undertook when she lost her mother. That journey became the impetus for her work as a grief guide and the creation of her message: We are not the same person we were before the loss. Although we are changed by the experience of loss, it also opens a portal to a new dream that comes to us through the pain of loss. Our healing journey is to recognize that dream, embrace it and experience the joy of our new creation.

As Uma comes from a place of similar experience, she has the ability to explain some aspects of how we are able to do this through looking at the unfinished business in our lives. And I love her way of describing how gratitude can help us move from being a victim to a victor. She calls it “shapeshifting” our grief story.

This is transformational work. To facilitate progress, Uma offers private sessions via phone and Skype, as well as an eCourse From Grief to Gratitude through her website www.umagirish.com.   She is also the co-founder of the International Grief Council which seeks to educate and empower those who are grieving a loss.

I’d like you to meet Uma Girish. She’s one of my next guests on Rebuilding Your Life: Moving from Disaster to Prosperity. The podcast is available iTunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/rebuilding-your-life-moving/id975055547 as well as Stitcher: http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=62871&refid=stpr.

Please get ready to listen in as we learn more about channeling grief into creativity with Uma Girish.

To Your Success,

Susan

Ready to Rebuild Your Life?

March 21, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

I’m ready to help. After taking the past couple months to complete the 30-Day Podcast Challenge, the podcast is official! The series is live – and the first 3 episodes are available through iTunes and Stitcher. The series is all about helping you rebuild your life, whatever your personal disaster may be. I describe it in the One Sheet that tells people about the show, especially publicists and potential guests. Our Home and Family publicist read it for me and gave it his blessing – thank you, Alfred – so I’d like to share it here so you’ll get a better idea of what it’s all about.

SusanSherayko2 (2)

“REBUILDING YOUR LIFE: MOVING FROM DISASTER TO PROSPERITY” with Susan Sherayko is a podcast where we help you transform your life by changing what you’re telling yourself. We engage in discussion with those who have experienced a disaster, as well as those who help us come through the experience. We look at what they did to heal, rebuild, and where they are now.

REBUILDING YOUR LIFE… will share stories with you, bring in experts in contemporary brain research and various kinds of positive self-talk, and provide action steps that can help you discover the truth of this information over the course of this series.

Natural disasters such as fire, flood, earthquake and landslides; financial disasters where we lose everything; lost relationships; bad marriages and business failures — What they all seem to have in common is that disasters come suddenly, unexpectedly and beyond your control. The effect is devastating, affecting every aspect of your life – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. In a flash, you lose all that you have created – or accumulated – around you. Your sense of security vanishes and for a period of time you are in shock, only to experience fear and a sense of powerlessness when the shock wears off.

However, we have the ability to overcome the negative situations and feelings of despair, fear and doubt that accompany disasters. This is where you find out how. Whatever the circumstances, – whether you feel powerless over your finances, health, bad habits, physical destruction, or relationships – you do have the power to turn your thoughts in a positive direction and rebuild your life.

REBUILDING YOUR LIFE…is hosted by two time Emmy nominated producer and author Susan Sherayko. She knows the subject intimately – inside and out. She’s been through this. Susan used these principles to get past the after effects of her disaster. A LifeSuccess consultant and Power Habits coach, her book Rainbows Over Ruins describes how she applied success principles, the creative thought process and positive self-talk in her own life to overcome the after effects of a landslide.

REBUILDING YOUR LIFE… That’s what this series is all about. Whatever your circumstances, you too can experience health, financial security and a sense of well-being once again. You can rebuild and move on to something even better. You can overcome the physical problems, fears and grieving, the mental challenges and negative thought habits that hold you prisoner.

Are you ready to move from disaster to prosperity? The time to start is now, right where you are. Tune in – and let’s start getting you back on your feet right now – not in the distant future.

Produced by Susan Sherayko, the REBUILDING YOUR LIFE: MOVING FROM DISASTER TO PROSPERITY podcast is available iTunes at: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/rebuilding-your-life-moving/id975055547 as well as Stitcher http://www.stitcher.com/s?fid=62871&refid=stpr

So there you have it. That’s what I’ve been developing for the past couple months during the 30 Day Podcast Challenge.

I now invite you to tune in and listen to the first podcasts in the series, like it, follow it or subscribe to the RSS feed. I would greatly appreciate it if you would become one of the first ambassadors to get the word out about the series, especially if you know anyone who is going through challenging times.

May you and yours discover the miracle of positive self-talk as part of your journey – whether you want to put a disaster behind you or embrace a powerful path to prosperity.

I’ll be traveling with you,

Susan

I’m Flying

February 15, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

Look at me, way up high…., here am I, I’m flying!

This spontaneous, enthusiastic Peter Pan outburst is the result of completing my first podcast. It took a bit of work to get the intro and outro outsourced, the podcast written and recorded and then stitched together on a hosting platform. Not being an editor (video or audio), it was a bit challenging to feel my way through the steps even with a written guide before me. However, I did it!!!

Then, I took my next step in the challenge to post the finished podcast on the distribution channel. It was much easier. And after a few days that felt extremely long – well, I guess they were, I stayed in the office until 8:00pm a couple nights to get this done – I posted the podcast into our 30-Day Challenge Facebook group. It felt so good to receive the loving, supportive comments from group members.

As I made that post, I had this curious sense of flying! It was as if I had been taxiing around the runway for some time and then, in the blink of an eye, I’m airborne. I am now “Successfully Mid-Air” – with a nod to Sandra Daly. That is the title of her latest book. It is the experience of being in the gap. Where you have been is behind you and you are moving toward where you want to be, but your feet don’t touch the ground. I have to ask myself, do I have my coordinates? Do I know where I’m going? Do I have the journey in mind? Who is flying with me? What am I feeling as I anticipate all of this?

Free. On track. On purpose. Bridging the gap and it is going to be fun to travel. This feels so good. This feels exactly like what I could do forever! It is exhilarating and liberating to get off the runway, lifting off to experience my dreams in process. Whatever happens, wherever this takes me, I can do this. I am so grateful for where I am right now.

I’m looking forward to sharing the first episode with everyone, but the Challenge is teaching us more than just how to make a podcast. It is also talking about how to market and promote, line up guests and monetize podcasts. The recommendation is to wait until we have three full podcasts before submitting to iTunes and Stitcher, the two major podcast sources.

I’ve already lined up the next two guests – Noah St. John (author, Afformations) and Sandra Daly (author, Pop Your Paradigms and Successfully Mid-Air). My sense of anticipation is high. We’ve been exchanging thoughts for content and I’ve been doing my due diligence to read their materials to draw upon for the conversations. This is fun!

If you’ve been sitting on the sidelines, unsure if you want to do a podcast, I suggest that you take this challenge for yourself. I’m experiencing such a sense of accomplishment working through it step by step. It’s the 30-Day Podcast Challenge – http://goo.gl/CD3jfA.

I’m off now to celebrate. It’s Valentine’s Day and Peter and I are going off on an adventure. I hope you are feeling safe to fly today.

To Your Success,

Susan

The 30 Day Podcasting Challenge – Checking In

February 1, 2015 By ssherayko Leave a Comment

Whoopee! My microphone has arrived! Am I really that excited about a microphone? Yes. It’s one of the few pieces of physical equipment that are part of doing podcasts.

Remember, a few weeks ago, I was telling you about the upcoming 30 Day Podcasting Challenge led by D’vorah Lanksy and Doug Foresta? Well, our group has been going through the steps for a little over 10 days now. Together, D’vorah and Doug crafted short audio and video instructions with simple action steps to complete each day, coupled with the very supportive Facebook interchanges.

I ran into a snag early on over the title for my podcast series. I was set on a title when Doug mentioned that you should always check on the availability of your title. By doing a quick search on Google and iTunes, I learned immediately that the idea I had was already taken. So it was back to the drawing board or thinking board in this case.

Taking a survey of friends and readers, I found that they enjoyed my book Rainbows Over Ruins because of its inspiring stories, perfect to incorporate into my podcast series.

Doug emphasized that if your listeners have no idea why a technique will benefit them, their ears will not pick up. And as the group began a little word crafting for a title, I became aware that too broad a title does not capture the hearts and minds of listeners. Although it took a couple days for me to hit on the right title, doing so helped me to hone in on the exact people who would want to listen to my podcasts.

The lesson? When people glance over or hear your title, you only have a few seconds to communicate the exact problem and desired results to them.

The new title? “Rebuilding Your Life: Moving from Disaster to Prosperity.” It’s specific and expresses my point of view. You can get past great loss. You can rebuild your life and go on to do much more. I am passionate about it because I lived my way through it after the landslide.

Once I felt comfortable with my podcast title, it’s been fairly easy to move through the next steps. I’ve been downloading software for recording, editing, converting to MP3 and distributing podcasts. I’ve purchased the microphone.

We’re designing our Intros and Outros for our series now. It’s very creative as I look for the royalty-free music and reasonable voiceover talent to pull the wraps for the podcasts together. I’m ready for the next week of our challenge and cannot wait to get started. While our first group is now 10 days into the challenge, anyone can join at any time as these are self-directed lessons. If you’ve been thinking about doing a podcast, you’ll find this really helpful. Here’s the link — http://podcastingsuccesssecrets.com/access/aff/go/susans

If this is beginning to sound like a review to you, you may not realize that I’m already a great fan of D’vorah Lansky’s.

She took me through the step by step process of conducting a Virtual Blog Tour. The experience was great and her Facebook community was filled with people who actively engage with one another. The end result: I was able to meet so many new people in many different places around the world and bring my audience with me.

D’vorah has a great gift. She is able to step out instructions with the same skill as a good Do-It-Yourself expert on television. I love hearing about great projects I can do, however, when it gets down to making those ideas a reality, it really helps to be working with someone who can explain them as I execute each step.

Fast forward, when D’vorah announced that she would be teaming up with Doug to help authors reach larger audiences through podcasting, I was enthusiastic about participating. What once felt highly technical and out of reach for me is now within reach. The process is no longer getting in the way and the instant feedback and exchange of ideas is making the 30 Day Challenge every bit as enjoyable as the Virtual Book Tour several months ago.

Stage fright be gone! This is going to be lots of fun.

To Your Success,

Susan

  • “I love working with Susan because she has an amazing ability to help me gain clarity and focus about the possibilities that surround me. Susan is so skilled and supportive that her faith in my abilities has transformed my thinking and now I know the action steps I want to take with certainty and enthusiasm.”

  • “Calm, Serenity, Wisdom, Patience, Empathy. These are the characteristics that I think of, when I think of you. Throughout our relationship, you have always “shared only and freely” with me. You have never been judgmental (of anyone really) or unkind with words. Your ability to take in all the information surrounding a situation, process it in a kind, loving and logical way and then interpret the information back in such a way that I feel that I too can learn and grow from the experience, whether it was mine or not. Susan, I believe that you are a conduit, maybe not the right word…a channel…o.k. I laymen’s terms, you are the glue that holds us all together. If I were ever in a crisis…I’d want you to be with me more than anyone I know.”

    Toni Casala
    Owner, Children in Film
  • “When the Producers Guild of America merged with the American Producers of America, limited benefits were available for a fast growing membership. Susan Sherayko stepped in and created the most successful enrichment programs possible for the PGA. She became the Chairperson of the Seminar programs and was able to offer the membership an opportunity to learn the essentials of how to be a better producer of TV, Motion Pictures and Syndication for many leaders and icons in our industry. The subject matter was vast as each seminar attempted to instruct the producers in a vast array of subjects. Susan produced or was responsible for the vision of this stellar committee. Turnout of attendees for these seminars was consistently gratifying in both in numbers and approvals. The legacy of Susan’s organizational skills and execution is exemplified by the continuing programs being offered today for the PGA membership…now over 4000 members strong. Thanks, Susan, I personally enjoyed attending your seminars and afterwards felt more confident and wiser. ”

    George Sunga
Executive Producer, “The Jeffersons”, Governor, Academy of Television Arts and Sciences
  • “Susan uses her whole brain when crafting solutions. She knows how to visualize the result she wants and then build the structure to support the dream. She constantly prods people who are stuck in one way of seeing something into realizing new paths to take up the mountains of success. Now she is willing to share her unique approach to creating success systems with people who are ready to go the next level in their business and personal lives. I would sign up for her seminars and coaching program quickly because once the word gets out the waiting list is going to be long. I can’t think of anyone else I would trust more with creating the logistics for launching a new endeavor. Susan knows how to create successful enterprises and she is willing to coach you to your next success.”
